If you are a fan of high-stakes fantasy, unforgettable character connections, and that fierce "just one more chapter" energy, clear your TBR pile. Devney Perry’s fantasy debut, Shield of Sparrows, has officially earned a spot right up there with Fourth Wing on my all-time favorites shelf.
What It's About:
In a world where the gods use terrifying monsters to keep mortals on their knees, Odessa is a princess who has spent her life feeling entirely powerless. She is used to being the overlooked royal—until a legendary monster hunter and a foreign prince step into her father's throne room and completely upend her life. Bound by a blood-sealed treaty, she is forced into a marriage with a stranger and thrust into a treacherous journey across the continent. But Odessa is about to discover that the only way to survive the monsters of her world is to stop hiding and become one.
Why I Fell in Love With It:
The Character Connection: This is where the book truly shines. I completely fell in love with these characters. Their growth, their grit, and the emotional core of the story made it impossible not to root for them every step of the way.
The Vibe: If you love sweeping fantasy worlds with a heavy dose of tension, slow-burn dynamics, and a heroine who refuses to stay boxed into the role assigned to her, this book delivers.
The Page-Turner Factor: It has that exact kind of addictive pacing that leaves you staring at the ceiling at 2:00 AM wondering how you got there.
Final Verdict:
If you loved Fourth Wing or any of the big romantasy staples that make your heart race, Shield of Sparrows is an absolute must-read. It’s easily a 5-star read for me, and I can't recommend it enough!
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
"What if I jumped? Balanced on the edge of a sheer cliff, I stood at the mercy of this realm, wiggling my bare toes in the dirt beneath my feet." by Odessa
"A strong gust of wind could tip me forward or backward. The slightest tremor in the earth, and I’d either fall." By Odessa
--I love this it is bold and strong first paragraph kinda what most people feel.
"I wanted to jump. I wantedI wanted to jump. I wanted to dive into that ocean blue. I wanted to be unshackled from everyone’s expectations for just one godsforsaken moment. Except if I jumped, I’d be late. And if I was late, I’..." by Odessa
--The fact that she was more afraid of being late to meet these people that her dad wanted her to meet then to jump off the cliff how many times has people been like I could jump but then I would be late for dinner almost like that scene of suicide squad where Harley tells joker love scares you but a gun doesn't just it's a very powerful wording for it only being the first little bit.
"The ocean beckoned. I stopped and turned. What if I jumped? Would anyone notice? No. Not for this princess. A smile tugged at my mouth. I raced for the cliff. My drab, gray dress streamed behind me as I ran, faster and faster, arms pumping, legs pushing. I didn’t think. I didn’t falter. One moment, my feet were tethered to the earth. The next, I was flying." by Odessa
"The man who entered next didn’t look like a god incarnate. He didn’t appear to be a ghost. He was tall and broad, like the other Turans. Muscled to the point of distraction. His chocolate-brown hair tickled the tops of his shoulders, and his chiseled jaw was covered in a short beard of the same shade. At first glance, he was just a man. Striking. Intimidating. But still, just a man. Yet his irises did not have the typical Turan green starburst. They were solid, molten silver. Liquid metal. Colorless, like my dress. The Guardian." by Odessa
"A King cannot kill his Sparrow, and a Sparrow cannot kill her King, either directly or indirectly, without death befalling them both."
“So, you’d rather rot in a golden castle, withering away to nothing while your family forgets your existence? You were nothing to them. Your father gave you away without so much as a blink. Your sister put on a show of bidding you goodbye, but I’ll wager she’s already in your fiancé’s bed. A man who also let you go without a fight."
If he could read my mind, I wanted that at the front. I hate you. A slow grin stretched across his mouth. “There’s my queen.” “Stop calling me that,” I seethed. “Make me.”
“Sometimes being strong and brave means staying behind and out of the fight.”
“When I am nothing but dust and ash, Turah will endure. I do not need a crown. And I have made peace with my destiny. But before I step into my grave, my choice is you.”
